Workpapers by ChangeGPS uses an add-in that runs inside Excel Online. Before you can use Workpapers by ChangeGPS, you need to install this add-in using the Workpapers manifest file. This article shows you how to install the add-in and how to fix the most common installation error.
Before you begin
Before you install the Workpapers add-in, make sure you have the following:
An Office 365 account. Excel Online works with any Office 365 account.
The Workpapers manifest file, downloaded as manifest.zip from the same Resources location as the Workpapers by ChangeGPS Excel file (Core > Resources > Tax Returns & Financial Statements > [year folder]).
Important: Workpapers by ChangeGPS only works in Excel Online. The add-in cannot be installed or used in the Excel desktop application.
Step-by-step guide
To install the Workpapers add-in in Excel Online:
Go to office.com and sign in with your Office 365 account.
Save the manifest.zip file to your OneDrive or SharePoint location, then unzip it so the manifest.xml file is accessible.
Open the Workpapers by ChangeGPS Excel file in Excel Online.
Click the Insert tab in the ribbon.
Click the Add-ins dropdown.
Select Upload My Add-in.
Click Browse and select the manifest.xml file you unzipped in step 2.
Click Upload.
Verify the add-in installed correctly
To confirm the Workpapers add-in has installed correctly in Excel Online, check for the following:
"Workpapers" appears in your task pane.
The ribbon shows a new Workpapers button.
Common issues
The upload fails with a "not a valid add-in" error. This error appears when you try to install or open the Workpapers add-in in the Excel desktop application instead of Excel Online. Workpapers by ChangeGPS is only supported in Excel Online. To resolve this, go to office.com, open the file in Excel Online, and repeat the installation steps above.
