How to use Blueprint

Overview of creating a Blueprint diagram, including adding entities, mapping relationships, and exporting the final PDF

This article walks you through creating a client structure diagram in ChangeGPS Blueprint — from placing entities on the canvas through to exporting the completed PDF.

Before you begin

Have the client's entity structure in mind — the names of each entity (individual, company, trust, etc.) and how they are connected. If the client already has a CIM record, you can import their entities automatically rather than adding them manually.

Step-by-step guide

Create a new Blueprint

  1. Navigate to the Blueprint app. Please go to Access > Apps > ChangeGPS Blueprint.

  2. Select New Blueprint.

  3. Enter a name for the blueprint (for example, "Smith Family Group — FY2026") and select Create.

  4. The canvas editor opens with an empty canvas.

Add entities to the canvas

Option A — Add manually:

  1. Select the + Add (to add Entity) button in the left toolbar.

  2. Choose the entity type from the dropdown:

    • Individual (green)

    • Partnership (yellow)

    • Company (red)

    • Trust (blue)

    • SMSF (purple)

  3. The entity appears on the canvas. Drag it to your preferred position.

  4. Click the entity or select the Entity Properties panel to enter the entity name and details.

Option B — Import from CIM:

  1. Select the CIM Import button in the left toolbar.

  2. Search for the client group.

  3. Select the entities to import — their names and types are pre-filled from the CIM record.

  4. Select Import — the entities are placed on the canvas automatically.

Connect entities with relationship lines

  1. Hover over an entity node. Connection handles appear on the edges of the node.

  2. Click and drag from a connection handle to another entity to draw a relationship line.

  3. The line represents the relationship between the two entities (for example, a trust and its corporate trustee company).

  4. Repeat for all relationships in the structure.

Arrange the canvas

  • Drag entities freely to create the layout you want.

  • Select Auto-arrange (the wand icon in the left toolbar) to automatically reorder entities into a logical hierarchy.

  • Toggle Grid (the grid icon) to show a background grid for precise placement.

  • Toggle Shape Key (the information icon) to show or hide the entity type legend.

Edit entity properties

  1. Select any entity node to open the Entity Properties panel on the right.

  2. Edit the entity name, type, and any additional details.

  3. Changes are saved automatically.

Add assets and liabilities

  1. Select the Assets & Liabilities panel icon in the right toolbar.

  2. For each entity in the structure, add its assets (property, shares, cash, etc.) with values.

  3. Add liabilities (mortgages, loans, etc.) against the relevant entities.

  4. Once you click Save, you will automatically be taken back to the canvas.

  5. The global panel shows total assets and liabilities across the entire structure.

Apply an overlay

Overlays add a contextual watermark to the diagram to communicate which view of the structure is being shown.

  1. Select an overlay from the right toolbar > Click Analysis > Select Tax or Risk overlays:

    • Tax — Shows the structure from a tax perspective

    • Wealth — Shows the wealth and asset view

    • Risk — Highlights risk areas

    • Asset — Shows the asset distribution view

  2. The overlay watermark appears diagonally across the canvas.

  3. Select None to remove the overlay.

Export the PDF

  1. Select Export in the header bar.

  2. ChangeGPS generates a multi-page PDF containing:

    • Diagram page — The visual structure diagram

    • Assets & Liabilities page — Summary table of assets and liabilities per entity

    • Structure Details page — Additional notes and structure context

  3. The PDF downloads automatically.

Tips and best practices

  • Name entities clearly. Use the full legal entity name (for example, "Smith Holdings Pty Ltd" rather than "the company") — this appears in the PDF and is read by clients.

  • Use auto-arrange as a starting point. Auto-arrange produces a clean hierarchical layout. You can then fine-tune the positions manually for a more polished result.

  • Add the firm logo before exporting. The firm logo is pulled from Admin Settings → Branding. Ensure it has been uploaded before generating client-facing PDFs.

  • Save the blueprint with a descriptive name. Blueprints are stored per client. Using a name that includes the financial year (for example, "Smith Family — FY2026") makes it easier to find the right version later.

Common issues

The CIM import is not finding my client. CIM import in Blueprint uses the same client search as other ChangeGPS modules. If the client is not appearing, confirm the CIM integration is connected in Admin Settings → Integrations and that the client exists in your practice management system. If the integration is connected but the search returns no results, the initial CIM sync may still be in progress.

The relationship lines are overlapping and the diagram looks messy. Use Auto-arrange (the wand icon in the left toolbar) to reset the layout to a clean hierarchical arrangement. Then manually adjust any entities that need repositioning. Toggling the Grid can also help with precise alignment.
